2009 Report - Thursday 16th July, Weymouth
After two years of terrible weather we finally got lucky, but only just!
We arrived on Wednesday to strong south westerly winds which put pay to
some teams planned practice sessions. But the forecast was for the wind to
die down over night and any rain the next day was forecast for about 16:00
when the competition would finish.
Remarkably enough the forecast was correct and our intrepid finalists
enjoyed a day of relative calm which was reflected in the variety and
amount of fish caught. In total there were fourteen species caught, which
were 7 bull huss, 6 conger eels, 31 lesser spotted dogfish, 7 gurnards, 1
plaice, 34 pollack, 298 pouting, 4 rays, 1 smoothound, 8 tope, 2 whiting,
24 cuckoo wrasse, 196 ballan wrasse and 259 mini species (which I have no
record of what they were). I understand the tope and conger eels were of a
good size and the plaice was 4.5lbs. All fish not being kept for the table
were returned alive except for the predation of the ever present gulls.
The following day we were greeted by a howling gale which kept the boats
in the harbour. Weren't we lucky!
The 2010 final at Beaumaris on 22nd July.
Please note that accommodation for these finals is booked at least a year
in advance and numbers are based on the regional teams that we know will
be taking part. If you want to bring your partner or make the event a
family holiday you must contact the angling council first, do not approach
the hotel.
Whilst competing in the national finals on special leave you are deemed to be at work and
are governed by normal Civil Service rules, as such you are expected to
turn up at the boats to compete, occupy the room allocated to you and
attend the presentation meal. Failure to comply with this timetable could
cause you to be charged for unoccupancy of rooms, charged for an evening
meal and may lead to disciplinary action by the Civil Service Sports
Council or your employer.
