BOAT ANGLING

2022 Report - Weymouth 1st July

Report by Bob Poole -

Things did start well for the event with one of the boats, Supanova, having to cancel the afternoon before due to the skipper being bed bound with a badly infected foot. Luckily he had managed to get a replacement boat, Flamer. Then at 23:00 the skipper of Snapper went down with Covid. Again a replacement boat, Sally Ann Jo, was organised. Certainly there is no other port that could facilitate replacements at such a late stage. By this time I was beginning to wonder what else could go wrong. The next day I found out, I lost the cheque to pay for the boats on the way to the marina!
The event was fished inshore as there  was a strong south westerly wind and the boats fished the Portland harbour walls and Weymouth bay. Each boat used differing tactics using wind and tide to make best use of the available fishing area. Sally Anne Jo and Meerkat went into Weymouth bay where a mix of pouting and small bream showed early. Odd conger and dogfish helped the score sheets tick over. Meanwhile Flamer went for the wall and made a good start with numbers of Wrasse and Pollack. The wall holds a lot of fish but is also a tackle graveyard with some competitors spending more time retackling than fishing. Flamer then moved on to the Adamant bank, where tope, rays and dogfish were the main scorers. Mike Patten (SW) and Mitch Johnson (M) were the two main contenders for the boat win. Mike looked to be in the lead from the start with Mitch playing catch up.
Sally Anne Jo then moved to the Portland wall with various Wrasse species, Poor Cod and a few Pollack filling the score sheet.  Meerkat followed shortly after with similar results. On Sally Anne Jo things were close at the top with James Windebank (N) and Bob Poole (M) looking favourites. On Meerkat, Ian McLean (SW) looked a clear leader. Sally Ann Jo then moved back into the bay onto a mud patch. Although slow the biggest fish of the competition, a 12lb 8ozs undulate ray, was caught by Bob Poole (M).
All boats were back by 15:30 and the score sheets totted up. At the presentation Chairman, Mitch Johnson gave an entertaining speech, highlighting many of the amusing incidents which occurred. These involved sea gulls, flag waving banana skins and and his own dismal casting skills.

Unfortunately two regions were only able to field two competitors. In all there were over seventeen species caught.

Please note that accommodation for these finals is booked at least a year in advance and numbers are based on the regional teams that we know will be taking part. If you want to bring your partner or make the event a family holiday you must contact the angling council first, do not approach the hotel.

There is more to preparation for these finals than sorting out your tackle and ordering bait. Unless you know who you will be sharing a room with get yourself a decent pair of earplugs just in case! Despite forecasts the weather is very changeable so bring seasickness tablets even if you have never been sick before and take them the the night before!

Drinking alcohol during a competition is not an advised action. You should bear in mind your responsibilities to your team mates and fellow competitors.

Whilst competing in the national finals on special leave you are deemed to be at work and are governed by normal Civil Service rules, as such you are expected to turn up at the boats to compete, occupy the room allocated to you and attend the presentation meal. Failure to comply with this timetable could cause you to be charged for non occupancy of rooms, charged for evening meals and may lead to disciplinary action by the Civil Service Sports Council or your employer. This also applies if you are retired as you are representing the CSSC.

Team Results - unfortunately during the results calculations a wrong formula was used to decide ties. Because of this just for this year we have decided to disregard the rules and let the teams share
places. Apologies to all involved and rest assured this has been resolved for future years.
